“Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, & you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be…This is the inter-related structure of reality.”
—Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

John,
Relevant. Revelatory. Revolutionary. That is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy.
We are uplifting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today. Despite the clownery taking place (*cough* Trump being inaugurated *cough*), we are choosing to center our message today around MLK’s lasting legacy and message of democracy, justice, hope, and love.
That becomes even more important with the urgency of now. The forces of hate that MLK was fighting against are rearing their heads.
We have to be honest: Racism and fascism are on the rise.
The work of MLK—and all of our revolutionary ancestors that guide our work— generational work.
It’s work that may not show its fruit for years or decades. And it is work that must be continued today, and every day. Our ancestors have given us the tools and the path forward. Many of them have laid down their lives and their freedom for this.
It is our duty to take up the mantle of responsibility and continue onwards. We will not let any loss, presidency, or disappointment stop us in the fight for Black liberation—to build a world where every Black person can thrive.
May you honor MLK in word and deed today.
Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day family,
Black Lives Matter
PS: Want more inspiration on the legacy of MLK? Check out the MLK artist series from our archives, which asks us to collectively remember Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. not just as an iconic Civil Rights leader, but as a human being full of love, joy, play, and healing.
Our grassroots movement is pushing for Black liberation every single day. We are striving to create a world where Black people do so much more than just survive. It’s time we thrive.
As an organization one of our biggest hurdles is consistency.
A recurring contribution of anything you can afford goes a long way as we plan for the months, years, and even decades ahead. This is the most effective way for small-dollar donors (like you) to power our Black liberation work.
Will you make a recurring contribution of $5 or more today so that we can keep building momentum for our movement?
