Trump's inauguration and Dr. King's legacy remind us today of the work ahead.
John,
Today, Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States in the Capitol Hill Rotunda. His administration is already rolling out a slate of sweeping executive actions, shaping everything from economic policy to immigration for the next four years.
That's not the only reason today is notable. It is also Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – a day when we reflect on the ideals of justice, perseverance, and unity that Dr. King championed before his death. To this day, his words remind us of our higher purpose, even in challenging times:
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
On this Inauguration Day, some Americans feel hope while others feel uncertainty. Our country faces growing problems abroad and at home, from our ballooning debt to a broken immigration system. Yet, Dr. King taught us that in these tough moments, change and progress are not borne from despair but from hope and action.
At No Labels, we believe the most enduring progress is made when leaders of courage work together to deliver results for the American people. Lasting change that moves the country forward most often comes from bipartisan legislation. Dr. King worked to make that a reality in his time, helping to rally a coalition of Republicans and Democrats to pass the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964.
This is why No Labels remains committed to supporting leaders in Congress who are willing to govern for all Americans. It is why we are here, standing firm in our belief that the only path forward is together.
As the days ahead unfold, it will be easy to feel overwhelmed by the political noise. But let us remember Dr. King’s vision of a better future and recommit ourselves to the work of building it.
Thank you for being part of this movement.
Margaret White
