John,
Today, Donald Trump was officially sworn in as our 47th President.
We know this was not the result that many of us worked for, and this is going to be a difficult day for many as we watch Donald Trump and his cabinet of billionaires prepare to take our country backward.
The many challenges facing Colorado, our country, and the world call for leadership that can rise to the moment, bridge our divides, and work toward the betterment of all.
That said, we all know Trump’s track record from his first time, what he campaigned for, and we have the receipts to show how unlikely it is that regular working people will benefit from his presidency. If this is anything like last time, the rich will get richer while the rest of us struggle to get by.
Colorado Democrats stand ready to fight back against mass deportations, inflationary economics, unqualified nominees, tax cuts for billionaires and corporations, and attacks on our fundamental freedoms.
We face a daunting task ahead of us, but we are going to tackle it together, and that’s why it’s important to focus in on the lessons of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today as we honor his legacy on this day. Dr. King warned us of the dangers of cowardice, expediency, and vanity in the face of a great struggle. “On some positions, Cowardice asks the question, 'Is it safe?' Expediency asks the question, 'Is it politic?' And Vanity comes along and asks the question, 'Is it popular?' But Conscience asks the question, 'Is it right?' And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but he must do it because Conscience tells him it is right."
We must all be ready to stand up for what we believe in – even when it feels dire, hopeless, and scary. The next four years demand people who care a whole lot to keep showing up.
If you’re committed to being in this fight for a better future, will you contribute whatever you can today? >>
Go, fight, win!
