John,
Connecticut has long stood as a beacon of progressive values, championing equality and justice. On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as we reflect on the profound legacy of Dr. King, we also recognize Connecticut’s role in advancing the civil rights movement.
Nearly 15 years before the federal Civil Rights Act, Connecticut became one of the first states to pass comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation.
This landmark action affirmed our state’s commitment to dignity, respect, and equal opportunity for all, setting a standard for others to follow.
Connecticut’s legacy is enriched by the work of activists like James Beard, who challenged housing discrimination in New Haven, and by landmark court cases that confronted segregation in our schools. These efforts positioned our state at the forefront of the fight for civil rights and equality.
Today, we honor the trailblazers who paved the way by continuing the fight for equality. We recommit ourselves to addressing systemic inequalities, protecting voting rights, and ensuring opportunities for every resident of Connecticut. As we strive to build a more just, equitable, and inclusive society, we keep Dr. King’s dream alive—pursuing it with resolve every day.
Sincerely,
Adrienne Billings-Smith
Vice Chair
