Dear John,
In February 2024 we introduced you to our new campaign ([link removed]) to free 15 Gentoo Penguins from a horrific existence. Deep below the streets of London, Sea Lifeās Aquarium imprisons these incredible animals without any daylight or fresh air. They live in a basement, surrounded by glass and the prying eyes of endless streams of visitors. Some of them have been in this dungeon for their entire lives.

The few dozen square feet of pool that the Sea Life London Aquarium's Gentoo Penguins have to swim in is nothing compared to the open ocean, where they can dive to up to 600ft, and swim as fast as 22mph!
This Penguin Awareness Day we are thrilled to welcome our colleagues at Born Free Foundation to the campaign. After discussing the fight to secure a safe future for the Gentoo Penguins, we are grateful that they have chosen to join us in the campaign for their freedom.

Born Freeās support is a fantastic step forward in this powerful campaign. In the time since Freedom for Animals launched this campaign, we have seen thousands of petition ([link removed]) signatures, regular protests outside Sea Life London Aquarium, 22 MPs' signatures on an Early Day Motion ([link removed]) in support, 26 high-profile signatories on an open letter ([link removed]) , and continued objections from the public about Sea Life's treatment of penguins.
We are now reinvigorating this campaign with Born Free Foundation's support to make this very clear: we will not stop until these penguins are moved to a suitable habitat.

A key partner in our campaign has been The Daily Express newspaper, who have provided consistent coverage from the beginning and directly put pressure onto Sea Life to address not only your concerns, but those of their own paying customers!
Sea Life keeps penguins in a windowless basement for one reason alone - profit. Tourists pay to come and see them, so they continue to breed generation after generation of living āexhibitsā, who did not consent to this life, and deserve so much better.
Our petition ([link removed]) demands that Merlin Entertainments permanently stops the exhibition of penguins, and guarantees the safe and permanent retirement of the penguins at the London Sea Life Aquarium to a facility that can provide a much more suitable environment. Not only do they have more than enough funds to do this, but, more importantly, they have the moral obligation to do so.

Thank you for taking a stand for these penguins and for animal freedom, we can't do this without you!
For the animals,
