Reps. Omar and Tlaib, like our campaign, are targets of white nationalist hate because of their activism and commitment to the better world we know in our hearts is possible.
Their bitter fruit continues to have devastating impact on our American dream of a pluralistic and free society: from the Muslim travel ban to yesterday’s announcement that, at Trump’s urging, Israel would ban Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib—the first Muslim women elected to Congress—from traveling to Palestine. (Tlaib has family members in the occupied West Bank and Israel today said she would be allowed to visit them under certain conditions—such as refusing to mention the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement while in Palestine, a concession that Tlaib and her family rejected).
We unequivocally support these brave representatives who refuse to be silent in the face of human rights abuses by a U.S. ally that has gone so far as to announce an illegal settlement named after Donald Trump. Our campaign for Congress stands with them and against white supremacy and the patriarchy in their many forms.
We must stand with members of Congress willing to fearlessly fight for justice and equality. Senator Bernie Sanders, responding to Israel’s decision to restrict the Congresswomen’s travel, said, “Anti-Semitism is not some abstract idea to me. It is very personal. It destroyed a good part of my family. I absolutely reject Trump's disgusting efforts to exploit fear of anti-Semitism to attack my colleagues.”
Reps. Omar and Tlaib, like our campaign, are targets of white nationalist hate because of their activism and commitment to the better world we know in our hearts is possible. Recently, right-wingers began circulating video of Rashida—who filed a resolution on impeachment soon after taking office earlier this year—disrupting a 2016 Trump rally. We were immediately reminded of Shahid’s 2015 arrest for publicly challenging National Security Director James Clapper at a Capitol Hill hearing.
We are reminded of Ilhan’s fearless advocacy against Trump’s travel ban and the rallying cry, “Come for One, Face Us All.”
We are reminded of the radical spirit that underpins the American experiment. These are the times that try our souls, and those who stand for justice now deserve our thanks and support.
