Friend – it's Sen. Robert Peters.
I'm emailing you on the day of the inauguration with a reminder, a request, and a plan to do better.
The strength of America comes from our diverse cultures, voices and dreams. Silencing diverse perspectives and experiences doesn't strengthen our society – it diminishes our collective knowledge and potential for growth.
Today our country has rolled back decades of work of those who came before us with Trump's expected Executive Orders.
I'm asking you not to stand for the attacks on our communities. Do not stand for the silencing of the folks who built this country. And do not stand for hate, bigotry, or racism.
Today, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. So instead, we must stand to protect each other. They may not be coming for you right now, but they will. And they will come again and again and again until there are none of us left.
We must protect our shared values and ensure that every person in this country can live with dignity and respect.
In the Illinois State Senate, I will be focused on protecting our state's residents. Here is our plan:
We will hold the new administration accountable to the promises they made on the campaign trail. They said they would make life better for working people, and I intend to hold them to it.
We will be proactive in ensuring that our state is a safe place for all of our communities.
And we will never stop fighting for each other and with each other.
In solidarity,
Sen Robert Peters
