Now we find god or at least each other
These last 100 days have been gut wrenching for democracy lovers. But for 230,000 more votes across 3 states, President Kamala Harris would be inaugurated today, and our world flipped upside down.
What now? We must remember who we are as a movement, and why: we are those that believe love and justice will prevail. That our country can still fulfill the promise that everyone - no matter their sex, race, or class - truly has dignity.
If you are considering stepping back and out of the struggle today, watch these three minutes. [[link removed]] Reverend King was assassinated while helping to lead a strike for Memphis sanitation workers. Nearly 60 years later, his Poor People's Campaign [[link removed]] continues ( w a call at 7 ET today [[link removed]] ). As does a disturbing level of poverty that is a major driver of the situation we're in. If our country can be so unfair, clearly the system is rigged. If the system is so rigged, our leaders must be corrupt, so decency and honesty must be in fact, deceit. So: Trump.
MLK Jr saw that there is no freedom for any until we are all free. In this, and so much, I believe that Reverend King is the true animating spirit of our movement. We will need, over the next four years, to walk to his well again and again, to drink from his wisdom and replenish.
The essence of that well is love. If that seems like a stretch for this moment, trust me that it will not be fear, or fury, or disgust that brings us out of Egypt. We're being called to bring our full selves, our whole-hearted selves, our boldest and most courageous, our most generous selves to this struggle.
“Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Surrounded by the acts of cynical capitulation from public figures, it can be exceptionally hard to find the fire of love still resonant inside of us. And yet, I believe that is what's required of us.
This feels unusual for me to acknowledge. I've spent the last 8 years becoming more and more of a technocrat, even if an "innovation" focused one. And I still believe in these tools. I believe that having feedback on whether what we're doing is working is crucial. But I believe that this moment will also require us to step into a trust in something even higher than audited randomized controlled trial results. It was the powerful words of Reverend King that pulled me as a 20 year old into becoming an activist. Something like those words will be required to survive and win now.
We win when we show that love and righteousness can be the greater force than fear and cunning. When that force is wielded for justice, and with power enough to win not just for us, but to win true justice for those harmed.
For all those in this fight for the long-term, it's time to gather together, to keep that sacred fire lit through this winter. I'll be starting with a simple little MLK Jr listening, discussion, and action group on Friday [[link removed]] .
I hope that Movement Labs can be a support to many, many people committed to continuing to do both the bold and transformational, and the day to day work.
I see you. I love you. Thank you for digging deep and staying with us.
