John,
Today, we remember the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader who fought tirelessly to advance civil rights and ensure fairness for all.
Dr. King’s vision of a more inclusive democracy is a call to action on a day like today.
Yet, as Donald Trump is inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States, we are reminded of what’s at stake in the years ahead.
This administration has already said they plan to follow a dangerous roadmap –
Project 2025 – to strip away our rights, undermine our democracy, and put partisan extremism above the needs of the American people.
We’ve seen the signs: Donald Trump has nominated wildly unqualified individuals like Pete Hegseth, whose loyalty to Trump overshadows any commitment to the rule of law. He’s given the world’s wealthiest man, Elon Musk, an office in the White House. These choices are not just unserious – they’re dangerous to national security.
I am a realist. I know the road ahead is not easy, but together, I know we can continue to make progress – no matter what obstacle Donald Trump or his MAGA cronies put in our way.
This moment calls for us to recommit to Dr. King’s vision – a vision of justice, equality, and a democracy where every voice matters. As a Black woman, I carry Dr. King’s legacy with me every day. His words, “The time is always right to do what is right,” guide my work as I fight voter suppression, systemic racism, and economic inequities.
Dr. King’s legacy teaches us that progress requires action. It calls on us to unite and work with whoever is willing to roll up their sleeves to push back against injustice and hold firm to the values that strengthen this nation.
Today, let us honor Dr. King’s legacy by standing firm, speaking out, and vowing to work relentlessly to protect the rights and freedoms we hold dear.
I’m committed to this fight, and I need you by my side. Let’s get to work.
Marilyn
