Dear supporter,
What a strange few months. We started the year in a relatively optimistic mood - whatever one’s political persuasion, the deadlock of the previous three years was at an end. We could now focus on domestic issues, debating the size and scope of the state and what infrastructure we should prioritise. Harry and Meghan were the hot news topics.
Fast forward a few weeks and what a change. The country is locked down; our everyday lives upended. Freedoms that we otherwise take for granted have been put on hold.
All for a legitimate reason - the covid-19 outbreak is a public health emergency and it’s hard to blame politicians for taking the actions they did, even if many might disagree with the scale.
But, as they say, we are where we are. The government, having decided to shut down the economy, made extraordinary interventions with taxpayers’ money to keep the show on the road. The state now pays the wages of over half of UK workers and loans to businesses are picking up pace.
It all means that the recovery will be a monumental effort. And we shouldn’t necessarily expect things to go back to the way they were in January. There are probably some permanent structural changes to how Britain does business from now on.
One thing’s for sure - it’s as vital as ever that the TaxPayers’ Alliance stands up for those who pay the bills.
You’ll see here that our campaign messages will remain the same throughout the rest of 2020 and beyond. Our vision of a pro-enterprise country with lower, simpler taxes funding better public services is the right one for the good times and the bad.
Emergencies such as this are exactly why we fight for what we do - so that we can pull together as a nation to see off a crisis. It means we must start helping the government with constructive ideas to map a course to sound public finances in the coming years.
We can’t do any of that work without you. Please donate today and help us to protect taxpayers in the recovery.
With best wishes,
John
