John,
Today is a tough day—Donald Trump has promised a flurry of executive actions to further a cruel agenda, and these actions will have devastating consequences for some of our most vulnerable communities.
We also know that Trump’s attacks on reproductive healthcare are likely to happen in the shadows in the first days of his new administration.
Looking ahead, here’s how we expect the second Trump administration to target our reproductive freedoms:
- Blocking providers from performing abortions for patients in emergency situations by dropping the Biden administration’s lawsuits over the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA)
- Cutting funding to Planned Parenthood and other clinics that currently receive Medicaid reimbursements and Title X funds, thereby denying pap smears, mammograms, STI testing, contraception, and more to patients across the country
- Preventing patients around the world from even getting information about abortion access by implementing domestic and global gag rules
- Rolling back FDA approvals of medication abortion—an effort already underway in an ongoing GOP-led lawsuit that is likely to land in front of Trump’s handpicked SCOTUS for the second time. Last year, they punted on this issue to avoid disrupting the election. Now it’s a more politically advantageous time to hear the case again.
- Enforcing the Comstock Act, a zombie law from the 1800s that could be used to ban medication abortion—including in blue states
The Vote Pro-Choice team is meeting this moment head-on, and it’s one that we’ve prepared for.
Our state and local leaders are already making moves to combat attacks: from stockpiling abortion pills to reserving funds to help patients and enacting shield laws to protect doctors from prosecution.
Community members like you have helped us elect pro-choice candidates in city halls and state houses since 2017—and those champions are our first line of defense in the months to come.
Thank you for staying in this work on the hardest days—we couldn’t be more grateful to have you on our team.
In solidarity,
Sara Tabatabaie
Executive Director
Vote Pro-Choice
P.S. I want to acknowledge the incredible life and legacy of Cecile Richards, a titan in her time, whose family shared the news of her passing this morning. We’re sending our deepest love and condolences to her loved ones, as well as immeasurable gratitude for her lifetime of service to women and to reproductive freedom.
“It’s not hard to imagine future generations one day asking: ‘When there was so much at stake for our country, what did you do?’ The only acceptable answer is, ‘Everything we could.’”— Cecile Richards
