As we pause to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I am reminded of a preacher whose life exemplified the wisdom of Saint Francis: “Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.”

Delaware’s history with racial equality is rich yet fraught with challenges. In 1960, Dr. King himself visited our state, standing at Howard High School to deliver the urgent call to be more just, more inclusive, and to shape a future rooted in equity.

Dr. King explained to us that “change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability.” Instead, it demands deliberate and tireless action. Each of us holds the power to ignite progress — not just through sweeping reforms but through the small, everyday acts of kindness and courage that ripple outward to transform lives.

Even now, the fight for justice remains unfinished. Too many of our fellow Americans face systemic barriers to the basic promises of democracy and opportunity — from suppressed voices at the ballot box to inequities in healthcare and beyond. Dr. King’s dream of a nation free from hate and discrimination is still a goal that requires all of us to come together.

As your senator, I’ve had the privilege of advancing critical legislation to bring us closer to realizing that dream. Whether it’s championing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, fighting for equal pay for equal work, or addressing racial disparities in policing, I remain committed to the pursuit of justice and equality for all.

Dr. King’s vision calls on us to work not just in reflection but in action. We can build a future where every child grows up in a country defined by inclusion, fairness, and hope — a future worthy of his enduring legacy.
