[link removed] [[link removed]] For years, former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb and First Lady Wilma Webb fought for Colorado to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and what he stood for by designating a state holiday to celebrate his legacy. They did not give up that fight. And they won.
In Colorado, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day and have a marade - a unique blend of a parade and a march - as opportunities for us to recommit to the ongoing hard work of protecting our rights, and defending freedom and equal opportunity for all.
Today, some want us to walk away from this fight, advancing the fiction that equal opportunity exists for all and all work to advance diversity and inclusion should end. Some businesses, under pressure, are walking away from their commitment to creating inclusive workplaces. That’s not just unfortunate for our society; it’s unfortunate for those businesses. We need everyone at the table with an equal voice to make our future better, to build better businesses, and that work is not over.
As Colorado’s AG, I am committed to the work of advancing equal opportunity for all. We try hard to walk that walk every day, addressing what is a well known mentoring gap for first generation lawyers, creating supportive environments through employee resource groups (including for veterans, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ individuals), and creating opportunities to celebrate different traditions.
Our national motto is “ e pluribus unum ,” meaning “out of many, we are one.” I take that motto seriously, as this is the nation that welcomed my family after we fled religious persecution. As your Attorney General, and as Governor, I will never waver from this commitment. I continue to believe in what Dr. King preached: the moral arc of justice is long, but that it bends towards justice.
On this MLK Jr. Day, thanks for all you do to advance the cause of justice and equality.
Phil
