Hi there,

Eight years ago today, Swing Left launched in the wake of Trump’s first inauguration with a single mission in mind: a renewed focus on organizing in key Swing Districts to elect Democrats up and down the ballot and fight back against MAGA extremism. You answered the call: since that day, this community has helped to secure so many electoral victories—big and small—up and down the ballot.

Despite the important victories of the past eight years, Donald Trump will—once again—become President today.

Undoubtedly, today is a somber day for our democracy and for us all.

Many of us—particularly the LGBTQ+ community, those living in poverty, people of color, women, immigrants, and all those who have been and will be disproportionately impacted by Trump’s hateful policies—will need our support throughout the next four years. But this community is uniquely qualified and ready for this moment, and we won’t stop fighting—we never have.

In a seemingly cruel twist of fate, this year—when we hoped and worked tirelessly to witness the swearing-in of our nation’s first Black woman president—Inauguration Day falls on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The irony is not lost on us. But moments like these strengthen our resolve to work toward a future we can all take pride in.

As we continue to analyze and learn from 2024, one fact remains unchanged: long-term, on-the-ground organizing works, and in several of the most competitive races in Congress, it meant the difference between a win and a loss (one Swing Left-supported candidate won by only 187 votes). This year, in the short term, we’re already looking ahead to key state-level elections, and in the long term are focused on flipping the U.S. House majority.

We’re also working toward shaping the future of the Democratic Party. Last week, we launched our [Five Organizing Principles]([link removed]) and reached out to Democratic National Committee candidates asking for their commitment to them, so that grassroots organizing will be at the heart of the DNC’s priorities, which we believe will set the Party up for critical victories at the state and federal level over the next two years. In a bit of good news on this difficult day, six of the candidates for DNC chair have committed to upholding these principles! As part of this effort, Swing Left is doubling down on our approach of “early, often, and sustained” grassroots engagement and infrastructure.

So, today, instead of focusing on Trump, let’s recalibrate and recommit to the work ahead to protect voting rights and vulnerable communities. Thank you, friend, for being here for the long haul. After all, as Vice President Kamala Harris reminded us, “Sometimes the fight takes a while—that doesn’t mean we won’t win.”

Onward,

The Swing Left Team
