John,

Today is Donald Trump’s inauguration day. In just a few hours, he will take office again – and go to work immediately attempting to dismantle our nation’s most sacred institutions.

We all know what is at risk: everything from our hard-won reproductive freedoms to the environmental protections staving off the worst of the climate crisis.

It’s easy at this time to feel helpless – but I hope we can take lessons from someone honored on this day: Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King was a tireless advocate for civil rights. He was arrested, assaulted, and ultimately lost his life because of his efforts to ensure Black Americans received equal treatment in our country. His resolve and unwavering commitment to justice should serve as a model to every American and help guide us through the uncertain times ahead.

To a better future,
