Fellow activist, on this day, we choose to honor Dr. King.

On Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a convicted felon is being inaugurated as our 47th President – a man who has threatened to strip away our rights and move our nation backwards.

Under Donald Trump’s next administration, Republicans seek to implement Project 2025, an extreme 900-page dystopian agenda that calls for eliminating the Department of Education and other critical agencies, replacing government employees with MAGA loyalist political appointees, eliminating abortion access, and more. Additionally, Republicans are calling for a rollback of voting rights in an attempt to ensure that they never lose another election again. And we have been watching in horror as our communities have braced themselves against the threat of mass deportations.

Over the next four years, one thing is clear: With the fate of our democracy on the line, we must be prepared for anything.

In the profound words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. Our democracy matters.” We refuse to be silenced. With you by our side, we will continue working together to push back against the tyranny of the incoming administration by defending our democracy and basic human rights. We know that Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, will bear the brunt of ignorant, racist, xenophobic messaging and harmful policies that will impact the livelihood of so many across the country. We are not standing down. NPP will continue to expand the electorate in PA by assisting eligible Pennsylvanians in registering to vote, and providing civic education on the issues that matter most to our centered communities. Now more than ever, we are committed to our work.

With critical judicial elections just around the corner, we will be out in our centered communities registering folks to vote and having meaningful conversations in neighborhoods all across PA. We will continue to advocate for the expansion of voting rights and will defend voters against any and all attacks on their freedom to vote.

We have a long road ahead of us, but we are ready to get to work to defend our rights and our democracy for generations to come. We choose hope!

The New Pennsylvania Project (NPP) is a voting rights organization with a year-round primary focus on voter registration, civic education, and mobilization. NPP centers historically disenfranchised and often neglected Black, Indigenous and other people of color, immigrant communities and the youth in our work. Through civic engagement, we ensure all eligible voters feel compelled to exercise their freedom to vote in the Commonwealth.
