John,
As we begin a new chapter in our nation’s history, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the past. Today, we honor and commemorate the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a trailblazer for civil rights and justice for Black Americans.
Dr. King Jr. and many other civil rights leaders are the reason why we have our voting rights today. They sacrificed and put their lives on the line to ensure every American has the ability to exercise the right to vote – regardless of who they are or where they’re from. But now, our democracy is under threat, and we cannot for a moment take these fundamental rights for granted.
As we enter the next four years, we must remain vigilant. The Republican Party has made it clear that they intend to reverse the progress that we have made and enact new obstacles in our fight for a more just and equitable world. It’s up to us to defend our rights and ensure that our nation moves forward, not back.
In Martin Luther King Jr.’s memory, let’s commit to continuing to bend the arc toward justice.
Together,
Shontel Brown
