We’re back! The 57th legislative session officially began on Monday. It was a day of celebration and reflection as we heard the priorities from Senate and House leadership, as well as the Governor’s State of the State address. I was honored to be sworn into my House seat alongside 59 other members; the moment made even more meaningful by having my family, friends, and local leaders there to celebrate with me. A new year and a new legislative session offer a blank slate to create opportunities for meaningful change.
This session welcomes 18 new members to the House, including four returning after previous service. Leading up to this moment, I made it a priority to meet with my new colleagues to get to know them and their policy areas. I’m encouraged to see shared goals in areas like criminal justice reform, housing attainability, and childcare accessibility.
That said, the reality of a divided government in an increasingly polarized environment means disagreements and distractions will be inevitable. My goal is to find common ground where we can, ensuring progress in the areas where alignment is possible. On critical issues like improving education, managing water resources, and protecting vulnerable communities, I’m committed to fostering tough but necessary conversations to push for progress.
This work isn’t possible without you. The power of the people is essential to back these decisions. I hope you’ll continue to tune into the issues you care about and advocate alongside me.
With Kindness,
Sarah
