Today marks a welcome shift, as DEI and climate initiatives become politically incorrect, and support for deregulation is on the upswing. But President Trump’s threats for tariffs bode ill, and despite hopes from DOGE, massive deficits will continue to threaten until fiscal restraint is forced on politicos.

At Independent, we know that administrations come and go, with pendulum swings back-and-forth. And in fact, there’s no way to ensure political reforms stick unless the zeitgeist changes. Good ideas must will out—as Milton Friedman put it, our task is “to develop alternatives to existing policies, to keep them alive and available until the politically impossible becomes the politically inevitable.”

At Independent, we take this task to heart, and with your help, we’ll be here developing and promoting innovative, appealing alternatives until the inevitable occurs.

Take a look below at our recent ideas on how the new administration can tackle executive overreach, civil liberties, inflation, Fed spending and the value of the U.S. dollar.

Thank you!

Mary L. G. Theroux
Chairman and Chief Executive, Independent Institute
