Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices of those who lost their lives serving in uniform. This Memorial Day, New Politics Founder Emily Cherniack shared some thoughts on the meaning of courage — for those who serve in uniform, for us as a nation, and for our politics.

We yearn for courage from our elected leaders. But having seen so little of it, we’ve become conditioned not to expect it.
This year, with every American experiencing a similar state of ambiguity and uncertainty, Emily’s asking that we recommit ourselves to reflecting on what Memorial Day is really about: courage. The courage of the generations of American warfighters who died defending our freedoms. The courage of their friends and loved ones to continue serving in the face of unimaginable loss. The courage of the essential workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis.
At New Politics, we’ve spent the last seven years testing and proving the theory that the lack of leadership in this country is not for a lack of leaders. And the lack of courageous leadership is not for a lack of courageous leaders.
