Hey, folks.
Tomorrow, I want to honor the historic life and legacy of a truly great man without mentioning Donald Trump, so I’ll share some thoughts on the inauguration today instead.
The man who will be sworn into office tomorrow is the polar opposite of Dr. King in every conceivable way.
A man who only thinks of himself.
Who disdains the brave men and women who laid down their lives for his freedoms.
Who has never experienced adversity.
Who revels in the suffering of others.
Whose bitterness and hatred has torn families and communities apart.
Who incites but never inspires.
Dr. King tore down barriers that divided and alienated us from one another; the other guy wants to slap them back up.
On August 28, 1963, Dr. King brought 250,000 peaceful protestors to the National Mall and delivered his historic speech, “I Have a Dream;” which today remains the defining ethos of the Civil Rights Movement.
On January 6th, 2021, Donald Trump brought a radicalized mob of 2,500 to the Ellipse, where he commanded them to go to the Capitol and “fight like hell,” causing nine deaths, hundreds of injuries, thousands of prison sentences, and a near-fatal blow to American democracy.
Tomorrow, as the anti-MLK is sworn into office, I’ll be thinking about all the times Dr. King was told to abandon his mission; those long days he spent sitting in a Birmingham jail, contemplating the best way forward in spite of the obstacles in his path.
But he believed, as I do, that “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.”
Donald Trump’s victory is a painful and stark reminder that the work begun by Dr. King is far from over. But action will be the antidote to despair. And we’ll weather the next four years side by side.
