Dear John,

Tomorrow is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so today I want to take a moment to reflect on the historic life and immeasurable legacy of Dr. King.

Dr. King devoted his life to the pursuit of a more equitable nation for all Americans – a nation where everyone, regardless of background, community, or creed, could prosper and live free from discrimination.

And while we have made significant progress towards the ideals of justice, equity, and opportunity that Dr. King championed, we have a long way to go before his dream of a truly equal nation will be realized.

John, it is up to us to continue Dr. King’s fight for racial justice, economic advancement, voting rights, and equal opportunity.

It is not lost on me that, as I continue this fight in the halls of Congress, I stand on the shoulders of leaders like Dr. King. As the first Black person ever elected to represent Ohio’s 13th Congressional District, I carry the names and legacies of those who came before me – including Dr. King.

So in his memory, may we all reaffirm our commitment to leading with love, serving our communities, fighting for justice, and creating a better nation for generations to come.
