Hey there,

Tomorrow, Donald Trump will become the 47th president of the United States. I know that many of us are still grappling with this reality — and for me, the best way to face what’s lying ahead is to get to work.

So before tomorrow’s inauguration, let’s take a moment to gameplan.

With a new president who seems hell-bent on destroying our democracy — and a Congress eager to operationalize his most dangerous policies — we must be focused, we must be persistent, and we must be strategic.

Here’s how we do it. You already know about our 10 Year Plan, the comprehensive strategy to have the fairest national map possible in 2032, and in every cycle until then. To stay on track, we’ll be focused on three key goals during Trump’s upcoming term as president:

1. Working to ensure fair congressional maps in states like Ohio and Wisconsin to level the playing field in the U.S. House of Representatives so Democrats have a fair shot to take back control and put a check on Trump’s power. Thanks in part to the fair maps community, Republicans’ current House majority is just a few seats — already more closely reflecting the will of the voters. After 2016, they had a 47-seat majority when their margin of victory in total votes for the House was much smaller. Looking ahead, the NDRC and our affiliates will be part of critical redistricting efforts nationwide — making sure congressional maps are as fair as possible.

2. Electing pro-democracy champions to state-level offices where they can slow down or stop the MAGA agenda. From state legislatures to state supreme courts, supporting the election of our endorsed Democracy Defenders will provide a critical xxxxxx against the most dangerous and anti-democratic elements of their agenda — and help make sure the officials who are shaping future electoral maps are committed to fair representation.

3. Protecting the upcoming U.S. Census. This isn’t just about a head-count — it’s about supporting fair representation and maintaining crucial resources for our communities. In Project 2025, Trump’s team threatened to upend this process by skewing the count to unfairly allocate federal resources, including the proposed addition of a citizenship question that could discourage people from responding to the census and leave some communities with fewer seats in Congress and less political power. An inaccurate census count would distort  redistricting outcomes and roll back our fair maps progress.

These are three enormous undertakings that will have lasting consequences for U.S. democracy and our fair maps movement. I know we can achieve these goals, but only if we all work together, stay involved, and contribute our time, energy, and financial resources to power this movement forward.

I’m so grateful to have you in this fight alongside us.

Sincerely,

Marina
