John, I started with All On The Line as a volunteer in North Carolina back in 2019, and I’ve seen far-right extremists go to great lengths to manipulate maps and overturn the will of the people here. But what’s happening in the Tar Heel state right now may be a new low:

The Washington Post: “GOP-led N.C. Supreme Court blocks finalizing election for Democratic justice”

To understand the context of our state supreme court’s behavior, we have to go back a few years.

In 2022, our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation, won a case called Harper v. Hall in front of the North Carolina Supreme Court. This case struck down the legislature's gerrymandered congressional and state legislative maps, and was monumental in our fight against gerrymandering and for protecting North Carolinians’ ability to exercise their right to be heard.

But just weeks later — as soon as Republicans took back the majority on the court — they showed their extremist colors by agreeing to reconsider the ruling. By April 2023, the court had overturned the landmark decision, saying that the judicial branch could not weigh in on partisan gerrymandering.

As Attorney General Eric Holder said at the time, “Make no mistake, this moment is the result of a concerted effort by too many in the Republican Party to bend — even break — the rules of our democracy in order to unfairly gain and then hold onto power.”

Then, given carte blanche, the legislature quickly went right back to their extreme gerrymandering ways. Lawmakers rammed through a new map that gives the GOP a significant advantage. North Carolina’s congressional map went from a 50-50 partisan split to Republicans claiming 71% of the seats in 2024.

That brings us to the present day, and what’s making headlines nationwide: the state supreme court’s Republican majority is once again threatening democracy — now by blocking the certification of an election where Associate Justice Allison Riggs defeated her GOP challenger. The right-wing candidate is baselessly trying to invalidate more than 60,000 North Carolinians' ballots in order to claim victory.

Why are they going all-out to try to secure this seat? Well, earlier in the campaign, the Republican candidate said he wanted to ensure there’s a conservative majority on the court for the upcoming redistricting cycle.

We aren’t standing by while the very foundations of our democracy are threatened. In the face of attacks like these, All On The Line is mobilizing grassroots activists in North Carolina and across the nation to fight for fair elections and fair maps.
