John,

Memorial Day is always a somber occasion, but today is especially difficult for all those grieving the loss of our heroes.

Serving our nation in uniform has been a proud tradition in my family since my great grandfather served in the Union forces in the Civil War. Members of my family have served in all branches of the service in every major conflict since then, and today my own daughter prepares at the Naval Academy to be commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy. Those who served in my family gave some – we were fortunate that none had to give all. Today, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedoms, protect their fellow countrymen and women, and defend our nation.

As congresswoman, my pledge is to always keep their sacrifices front of mind, to emulate their selflessness, and to take inspiration from their commitment and ideals.

Please join me in giving our thanks and gratitude for them today and every day.

Best,
Brigid
