John,

Kimberly here. This is one of those emails I had to write myself. As a mom, I can not possibly imagine the pain of you who have lost a son or daughter. As a sister, I can't comprehend the pain of those who have lost a sibling. If you've lost a loved one in military service, I'm so very sorry.

Please join me in taking a moment today to think about the regular, everyday lives of those who fell while in military service. They were our friends and family: neighbors, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, granddaughters and grandsons.

They were loved beyond measure. They had a certain laugh that is now silenced. They made that one dumb joke you wish you could hear them tell one more time. They hugged their own children tightly before they got on that plane and left for deployment, assuming they would return and pushing away the fear that they would not.

The loved ones they left behind will never be the same.

We should work as hard as we possibly can for policies that create peace and also honor our fallen.

We can help create a world where there are fewer lives lost in war. And today, my thoughts are with all the loved ones of those who have fallen. I carry you in my heart. Please know you are thought about far more often than on Memorial Day, and we are especially honoring your loved ones today.
