Test, nothing we saw at his confirmation hearing should convince anyone that Pete Hegseth is the right person to lead the Department of Defense.
The softball questions Hegseth got from his buddies on the Republican side show us that they’re likely to railroad him through. But several direct and damaging lines of inquiry from Democrats — especially those from VoteVets members — tell you all you need to know.
Take Senator Duckworth, for example. Tammy Duckworth flew Black Hawks with the National Guard in Iraq. She lost both of her legs after she was shot down in combat. Today, she drilled into Hegseth for his opposition to women serving in combat roles. She challenged him to identify at least one international security agreement, and how many nations were members of ASEAN — just a small part of his potential portfolio as SECDEF.
Hegseth could not do it.
Or Senator Slotkin. Elissa Slotkin served three tours in Iraq with the CIA before serving in the State Department and Department of Defense. She pressed Hegseth on his commitment to the Constitution — and whether he would be willing to defy Trump should he issue any unlawful orders.
Hegseth dodged.
In an interview, Senator Mark Kelly, who flew 39 combat missions as a Naval Aviator in the Gulf War, put it best: “No job is more important to our national security than Secretary of Defense. Nothing I’ve seen about Pete Hegseth’s record indicates he’s qualified.”
It matters having the right people in the right jobs. We are all better off because Senators Duckworth, Slotkin, and Kelly serve in the U.S. Senate. Pete Hegseth is in no way ready to serve as Secretary of Defense. If he is confirmed it is not just our Troops that will be in harm’s way — every American will be less safe.
We’re going to do everything we can to prevent it, but the odds are against us. We need you with us.
Please, chip in $5 to VoteVets as we work to prevent Pete Hegseth from becoming Secretary of Defense. Too much is at stake now to sit on the sidelines.
