I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: There is no “off year” in the fight for fair electoral maps.

With the consequential 2024 presidential election in our rearview, 2025 is a crucial year to put in the work that will advance the fight for our democracy in 2026, 2028, and beyond.

In fact, we’ve already got our eyes on a handful of key advocacy efforts coming up this year in multiple states across the country. Our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation, is currently litigating in five states to dismantle illegal gerrymanders and protect fair maps. Meanwhile, we’re preparing to stop potential efforts by Republicans to steal more congressional seats through extreme gerrymandering — including in Ohio, where new congressional maps will be drawn this year. And we must stay ready to protect the 2030 Census from efforts to tamper with it, to ensure an accurate count and fair representation.

There’s plenty of work lying ahead — and I know that with your help, we’ll be able to do whatever it takes in 2025 to ensure fair electoral maps for years to come. Chip in now to fund our work to stop gerrymandering and defend fair elections.

Here are some of the key fights we’re eyeing this year — including court cases that our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation (NRF), is actively involved in that could affect the makeup of up to eight or even nine districts and where we must make sure voters are fairly represented:

• In Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana, plaintiffs supported by the NRF will be fighting to protect Black opportunity districts that came about as a result of our landmark victory before the U.S. Supreme Court in Allen v. Milligan.
• In Texas, the NRF continues to support a case involving Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, challenging the state’s congressional and legislative maps.
• In Florida, we are awaiting a decision from the state supreme court that could restore a Black opportunity district in Jacksonville.

In addition to our affiliate, NRF’s, court cases, we are gearing up for new maps in key states, including:

• In Ohio, we’re gearing up for a new congressional map to be drawn this year — the latest step in a years-long battle for fair maps in the state that has seen far-right partisans continue to mislead Ohioans about the redistricting process and manipulate maps despite the redistricting reforms passed by voters in 2015 and 2018.
• And in New Hampshire, with a Republican majority in the state legislature, we need to be vigilant about any attempts to alter the maps and steal more congressional seats — like Republicans did in North Carolina.

We must stay ready to mobilize against power grabs in these states and across the country. The work we put in during the weeks and months ahead could make a massive difference in fair representation. We must not wait, we must not waver — the stakes are simply too high.
