** Come Rally for Better Parks

As part of New Yorkers for Parks, we encourage you to come to their rally on the steps of City Hall at 10:30 AM on Thursday, Jan. 23 to kick off our 2025 advocacy for better parks in Northern Manhattan and throughout the city. ** Albany Advocacy Day: Pass the NY HEAT Act
------------------------------------------------------------

Join us ([link removed]) on Tuesday, January 23 for our first Albany Advocacy Day of the year, which will focus on passing the New York Home Energy Affordable Transition (NY HEAT) Act. We will be taking a bus up to Albany and scheduling meetings with key state legislators to make sure we get this bill over the finish line. It passed the Senate last year, and we now have more than 70 sponsors in the Assembly, so we are close. Help us convince a few more legislators as well as Governor Kathy Hochul to support the NY HEAT Act ([link removed]) !

** February 2025 Membership Meeting:
Celebrate Black History Month!

** Climate Justice Working Group (CJWG)
------------------------------------------------------------

Want to get more involved in our climate work? We have our first Climate Justice Working Group meeting of the year next week on Tuesday, January 21st at 6pm on zoom ([link removed]) . This year's legislative cycle is just beginning, so we will be discussing all things New York State.

Join us ([link removed]) to hear how we're working towards energy justice at the state level through NY HEAT and the GAP Fund. Eric Walker, our Energy Justice Senior Policy Manager, will also break down the Cap and Invest program.

Yesterday, the Governor delivered her State of the State ([link removed]) , outlining her top priorities for the upcoming year. While there was a heavy focus on affordability, she said little to nothing new on climate justice or energy costs, and notably, left out important initiatives she has supported in the past like NY HEAT and Cap and Invest. We are going to talk about what this means for WE ACT's priorities, and where we go from here.

** Learn About Indoor Air Pollution
------------------------------------------------------------

Briana Carbajal and Annie Carforo will be on a panel discussing indoor air pollution as part of Montefiore’s Social Medicine Rounds speaking series. The series is designed to connect their staff, faculty, trainees, and community members to leaders who discuss the medical, economic and psychosocial issues impacting the health and wellness of our Bronx community. Eric Walker was quoted in a NY Focus ([link removed]) article on New York State Governor Kathy Hochul’s “bait and switch” on climate in her 2025 State-of-the-State Address, as the article called out her failure to include a plan for a Cap-and-Invest program or the NY HEAT Act. He noted that “What we see instead is a presumably taxpayer-funded plan that doesn’t get to the scale that we need.” The article was picked up by some local papers, including the Glen Falls Post-Star ([link removed]) . He was also quoted in RTO Insider’s ([link removed]) coverage of the address: “Today’s announcement is really a minimalist first step toward broader climate action. Instead of taking bold action, Governor Hochul announced a plan that fails to meet the scale of the
challenges we face. Worse, a billion-dollar state appropriation shifts the financial burden to struggling New Yorkers instead of holding the corporations responsible for pollution accountable. A robust cap-and-invest program is the long-term solution New Yorkers need to tackle pollution, improve air quality and deliver a just transition for our communities.”
