For many, today marks the unofficial start to summer. In my family, the morning is usually spent at the Memorial Day service and parade sponsored by VFW Post 3054 in East Setauket. My kids each marched in the parade with the Paul J Gelinas Junior High marching band, and just last year, I marched with the Three Village Community Trust (photo below). It’s an event our community really turns out for, including the Daisies, Brownies, Scouts, bands, volunteer fire companies, Coast Guard Auxiliary, and so many others marching, and all the parents and neighbors watching on the side.

This year, of course there will be no parade and no memorial service, and many of us are missing the opportunity to gather as a community to remember what this holiday is really about.

Today, let’s join together in spirit in honoring those who have risen to defend our values and freedom as a nation and made the ultimate sacrifice for our prosperity.

Happy Memorial Day, John.

With gratitude,
Nancy
