Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I’m excited to officially begin the 2025 Minnesota Legislative Session and continue serving as your representative in St. Paul. It is an honor to work on behalf of the people of District 29A, and I remain committed to representing your values and advocating for the issues that most matter to us. Thank the good Lord we stopped the Democrats Trifecta; we now have what most Minnesotans would call a balanced government, instead of single party control.
As we begin this session, I want to share some important thoughts on transparency, accountability, and the work that lies ahead for our state.
I want to begin this letter by addressing a situation that occurred this past weekend. On the evening of January 12, DFL House members held a secret, illegitimate swearing-in ceremony—an act that not only undermined the formal oath process but was blatantly disrespectful to the hardworking voters who entrusted them with the responsibilities they were elected to carry out. To make matters worse, these members have refused to show up and do the work they were elected to do while continuing to collect taxpayer-funded paychecks. While I understand that this decision may have been made with good intentions, it is deeply concerning that we, as public servants, are not setting the example for transparency that Minnesotans deserve.
Transparency is the foundation of good governance. When decisions are made in secret, it not only diminishes trust, but also keeps the public in the dark about the decisions being made on their behalf. I am committed to ensuring that our government works in the open and serves the interests of the people. We must hold ourselves to the highest standard of accountability.
As your state representative, I am fully focused on the work ahead. I am committed to serving with integrity and ensuring that your tax dollars are spent wisely.
This session, I’m proud to serve in a few important roles, including as Lead Chair of the Legacy Finance Committee; as well as serving on the Children and Families Finance and Policy Committee, and the Elections Finance and Government Operations Committee. In these roles, my focus will always be on using our state’s resources responsibly, with Minnesota families front and center in every decision. I’m also passionate about pushing for policies that tackle the issues that matter most—like public safety, education, and fiscal responsibility—so that we can build a stronger, more prosperous future for everyone.
There is much work to be done and Minnesotans deserve a government that works for them—one that’s efficient, transparent, and accountable. Sadly, not everyone in the Legislature shares that vision. But here’s the thing: we can make a difference. Let’s rise above the politics and focus on the work that matters!
So, I’m calling on my colleagues to put aside our differences and focus on doing right by the people of Minnesota. Let’s be transparent. Let’s be accountable. And let’s get to work! That’s the promise I made to you, and it’s one I plan to keep.
The people of Minnesota are counting on us. Let’s get it done!
Sincerely, Representative Joe McDonald State Representative, District 29A
