Dear John,
[1/17/2025]— This year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on January 20th, 2025, the same day as Donald Trump’s inauguration. We should use this highly ironic coincidence as a time for reflection and action as we are reminded of the powerful legacy of service, justice, and equality that Dr. King championed. This year, as we reflect on his legacy, it’s also an opportunity to embrace President Joe Biden’s message from his farewell address: We must remain vigilant and committed to rebuilding our democracy.
In these times, it’s understandable to feel overwhelmed by the challenges we face. While the news may be heavy, our work must continue. We are a community of resilient individuals, and together, we have the power to make change. Dr. King’s dream of a just and equitable society is not just a vision — it is a call to action for each of us. Let’s honor his legacy through service. Following his example, we too can help ensure that the arc of history bends toward justice.
"On this MLK Jr. Day, we are reminded that the struggle for justice, equality, and democracy is not a moment in time, but a lifelong commitment. Dr. King’s vision calls us to not just reflect, but to act — by dedicating ourselves to the service of our communities and renewing our democracy,” said The Union Founder Reed Galen. “It is only through our collective efforts, our unwavering vigilance, and our shared belief in the promise of a better tomorrow that we can honor his legacy and build the America we all deserve."
