Hey Team –
The more we learn about Meta's plan to roll back protections against hate speech, the angrier we get.
It turns out, users can spew hate for likes and clicks, feeding into the algorithm and making Meta more money. For example, users are now allowed to call people mentally ill because of their gender or sexuality [1] – and with no fact-checking [2] or term violations, these dangerous claims are allowed to spread.
Meta is a source of public information, whether we like it or not. And as users, we deserve a safe place to get that information. If we don’t band together, they’ll continue to make their platform more and more dangerous in exchange for profit or favors from the incoming administration. So we’re partnering with UltraViolet, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of all impacted by sexism and patriarchy, to mobilize our collective energy against these harmful platform changes. Add your name to send a clear message to Meta: we demand protections for women and LGBTQ+ people on the platform NOW.
DEMAND PROTECTIONS NOW
Mark Zuckerberg, who first implemented protections like fact-checking after getting backlash for Facebook’s role in spreading disinformation in 2016, claims that these changes are to end censorship on his platform and allow for expanded speech. But we know who will be bullied, harassed, and censored while hate speech is allowed to flourish. And we stand against it.
Social media companies rely on their users and our attention to make money. Across the internet, people like us are standing up to these Big Tech monopolies to let them know that we expect protection when communicating online, or we’ll take our attention elsewhere. Sign your name to let Meta know we mean business.
