This past cycle alone, over four million Americans were unable to cast their votes due to felony disenfranchisement laws. These policies, many of which date back to the post-Reconstruction era, disproportionately affect people of color.

In Mississippi, one of Groundwork’s target states, thousands of people with criminal convictions were banned from voting for life. Even those who legally could vote within the prison system were not allowed to do so by prison authorities. And it’s not just Mississippi — twelve other states hold lifetime voting bans for those convicted of disenfranchisement crimes.

This is unjust, and we must call on our elected officials to address this issue.
