Memorial Day commemorates all of the patriotic women and men who have paid the ultimate price in service to our nation.

John,

Traditionally, today — Memorial Day — marks the start of the summer season.

Family BBQs, family trips, and American flags billowing in the wind — that’s what most people think about today.

While the coronavirus pandemic changes how we come together physically, it must not get in the way of the true meaning behind this important day.

Memorial Day commemorates all of the patriotic women and men who have paid the ultimate price in service to our nation.

The depth of sacrifice from our nation’s heroes can cause some to become overwhelmed. But John, today is a day for the simple acts of remembrance and recommitment.

As we honor the memory of our nation’s heroes, we reflect upon what Abraham Lincoln referred to as “the last full measure of devotion”.

Today, I think about the brave Americans who never returned from the fields of battle. May their memories be a blessing and their legacies a tribute to their patriotic service.

In honor of their memory, I leave you with this:

"It is for us, the living to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they have, thus far, so nobly carried on. It is for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us. That from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion.

"That we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

— President Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg Address

With gratitude,
Rusty Hicks
