Have you ever been bothered by glare and over-bright lights from streetlights, commercial businesses or nearby residences? If you live in Vienna or visit shops or restaurants there, this is your opportunity to weigh in by taking the town's survey seeking input on lighting in the town. Your answers to the survey can encourage the town to adopt an ordinance that reduces light pollution. You can fill out the survey here ([link removed]) . Be sure to do it soon; the deadline for survey submissions is February 28.

Why does this matter? Light pollution, the inappropriate or excessive use of artificial light, has adverse human health consequences and also affects birds and other wildlife by disrupting their circadian rhythms, reducing the availability of food and contributing to increased mortality of their young. Lights should comply with the Five Principles of Responsible Outdoor Lighting at Night developed by DarkSky International and the Illuminating Engineering Society. Lights should be: Useful, used only if it is needed; Targeted, directed so that it falls only where it is needed; Low Level, no brighter than necessary; Controlled, used only when it is needed; and Warm-Colored, limiting blue-violet lighting to the least amount needed.

Here’s a link to a site ([link removed]) with photos of good lighting that improves visibility while reducing light pollution and lowering energy costs. And visit our Bird Safe NOVA ([link removed]) site for more tips on reducing risks to birds, including the risks from light pollution.
