Dear John,
As we head into a Donald Trump presidency on Monday, we face a lot of uncertainty. Now is not the time to be afraid of what may come or let those with a bully pulpit intimidate us into silence, but to educate ourselves and others about our rights–to stand strong in the face of fear and to hold and support each other.
Here are a few things helpful you need to know now:
1. Know your rights - no matter what some people in power are saying, LGBTQ+ students and educators are protected by law. Learn more here: [link removed]
2. Learn about protections for LGBTQ+ students - The U.S. Department of Education has recognized that LGBTQ+ students are protected under Title IX since at least 2001, and 26 states provide additional protections and methods to enforce students’ civil rights beyond Title IX. If you or someone you know has experienced discrimination, you can file a local, state, or federal complaint to hold your school accountable. Learn more and file a complaint here: [link removed]
3. Take Action against Harassment - Harassment and discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in education settings is against the law, and both students and educators can assert their rights if they face unlawful discrimination at school. Check our new Avenues to Justice guide ([link removed]) that outlines how students, families, educators, and community members can seek support to address anti-LGBTQ+ harassment and discrimination at school. It includes state-by-state remedies that can hold your school accountable and legal helplines that can offer support on planning your next step to take action.
If you can use your own resources, now is the time to donate to GLSEN ([link removed]) so that we can continue our crucial work to move forward state and federal policies that protect LGBTQ+ students and build safer, more inclusive learning environments.
