As COVID-19 deaths in the US near 100,000, we are mourning all those who’ve died from capitalism’s catastrophic response to the pandemic. The working class is bearing the brunt of coronavirus deaths, with elderly, Black, and Latinx people among the most disproportionately affected. We remain more committed than ever to taking care of each other during this crisis and fighting against the billionaire class and capitalism. You can read our statement on the COVID-19 crisis here.
On Thursday the Seattle government swept another homeless encampment in the Chinatown-International District, throwing away people’s belongings and destroying more than 60 tents. Mayor Durkan continues to sweep encampments during a global pandemic, ignoring the recommendations of the CDC. We stand with our houseless neighbors in fighting against such cruel, deadly actions: sign both the CID Coalition petition and TRU petition calling on the City Council to pass legislation against the sweeps.
This crisis shows the urgent need for affordable, green social housing, which is why we’re going all out to Tax Amazon to fund Green New Homes. Sign the ballot petition and donate at GreenNewHomes.org and ask others to sign too!
Last week, we heard from Meagan Day and Micah Uetricht, authors of the book Bigger Than Bernie, about how to carry on the political revolution after Bernie’s campaign. They talked about strategies for laying the groundwork to become politically independent from the Democratic Party, and the necessity of socialists joining labor struggles. Come continue (or join!) the conversation at our Socialist Night School tonight! We’ll talk about the strategy of a “Dirty Break” from the Democratic Party. Then, on Thursday, check out our Beyond Bernie Happy Hour to swap experiences from the Bernie campaign, feelings on the present situation, and ideas for what comes next.
Finally, support farmworkers on strike in Yakima! Seattle DSA members will be heading to Yakima tomorrow to bring masks, food, water and other material support. Please donate here to help, and/or to the strike fund directly!
