We need to pay more attention to Wisconsin’s most insidious drug problem |
There are worse things than dying.
That was the crazed, drug-induced argument of the naked-from-the-waist-down guy on meth with the dog leash around his waist who broke into Shelly Weber’s place begging to be shot because he was certain he was, according to Juneau County Sheriff’s Department reports, infested with “mudpuppies.”
But it’s also an argument — and not a crazy one this time — for paying more attention to the meth epidemic in Wisconsin. |

State superintendent wields power to reveal information useful in improvement |
By Jim Bender & Patrick McIlheran |
The state schools superintendent elected this spring will have a remarkable amount of power.
Three candidates will be on the Feb. 18 primary ballot: incumbent Jill Underly, backed by the state Democratic Party, challenger Jeff Wright, a school superintendent from Sauk Prairie who’s backed by the political action committee of the state’s most powerful teachers union, and Brittany Kinser, who led independent public charter schools as well as City Forward Collective, a Milwaukee school reform nonprofit. The two with the most votes will progress to the April 1 general election. The winner will have far-reaching powers to advance changes and improvements in education, if she or he chooses to use them. |
Working-age adults from the age of 19 through 64 from southeastern and central counties of Wisconsin participate in the labor force at the highest rates in the state, while the northern counties participate at the lowest rates, analysis of 2023 Census Bureau data shows.
The counties with the highest participation rates were Washington, Iowa and St. Croix, all at more than 85%. At the low end, the Menominee County participation rate was 65.5%, while the next two lowest, Forest and Burnett counties, had rates of 70.8% and 71.6%, respectively. |

“If they’re going to spend millions of dollars to collect signatures, and if everyone is using paid collectors, is this really the will of the people?” Hohman said. There are other hazards to the process. |
