Remembering the former Mayor of Oldham, Alan Griffiths (1996-97)
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of former Mayor of Oldham, Alan Griffiths, who served as Mayor during 1996-97.
Alan passed away peacefully on Wednesday 8 January, surrounded by his family at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice.
His funeral service will take place on Wednesday 29th January at 12.45pm at the United Reformed Church, Rochdale Road, Shaw. This will be followed by a private committal at Oldham Crematorium for family and close friends.
A gathering to celebrate Alan’s life will then be held at The Gables, Kershaw Street, where memories can be shared.
A book of condolence has been opened at the Civic Centre Reception in honour of Alan. If you would like to leave your messages of remembrance, you are welcome to come in and sign it.
The family has requested family flowers only. Donations in Alan’s memory can be made to Dr. Kershaw's Hospice.
Our thoughts are with Alan’s family and friends at this difficult time.

Caring and inclusive school that feels like home congratulated for raising Ofsted rating
North Chadderton School has been congratulated for raising its Ofsted rating and scoring 'good' in all areas.
At North Chadderton School, staff foster positive relationships with pupils, and an increasing number are benefiting from extra-curricular activities said Ofsted inspectors.
The school has extended its lunchtime to give more time for pupils to join clubs, and as a result, there are more opportunities for them to take part in a wide variety of sports, musical and cultural activities.
The school now has 34 clubs including dissection, debate, Pokemon, Sudoku, dance, drama and a choir.

Delph Lane to close for resurfacing
Our highways teams are going to be improving Delph Lane, Delph.
We are going to be carrying out resurfacing work along the full length of the road, from The White Lion through to the A62, which when finished will provide drivers and other users with a smoother and better road surface.
The work is due to begin on Monday January 20 and will last until Friday January 31. We’ll look to complete it sooner if we can.
So we can carry out the resurfacing safely and quickly the road will be closed for the duration of the work.
A diversion will be in place via the A62 Huddersfield Road, The Sound, King Street and High Street.

Council leader responds to government announcement
The leader of Oldham Council, Councillor Arooj Shah, has welcomed the government's announcement on child sexual exploitation, including support for an independent review of child sexual exploitation in Oldham.
Councillor Shah said: "We welcome this announcement and indeed any action that the government takes to establish genuinely survivor-led inquiries into historical sexual abuse."
