Last Friday, I was elected First Vice-Chair of the SANDAG Board of Directors to serve alongside newly elected Chair Lesa Heebner (Solana Beach) and Second Vice-Chair John Minto (Santee). I look forward to collaborating with my fellow board members, SANDAG staff, and our regional partners to improve the lives of San Diego County residents. As a former land use consultant, community advocate, and registered civil engineer, I am grateful for the opportunity to work towards adopting the 2025 Regional Plan, addressing our vulnerable coastal railroad tracks, and tackling projects across our region that will lead us to a more sustainable future.

ON THE GREEN EDGE

“Of San Diego’s nine councilmembers, none have arguably done more behind the scenes on the environment recently than Joe LaCava.”

District 1 has one of the largest collections of coastlines, wetlands, marshes, natural preserves, open spaces, and beaches, it is my priority to continue working to ensure my district and our city’s future are resilient and sustainable. This includes restoring and protecting our ecological sanctuaries and safeguarding our public infrastructure, private property, and recreational opportunities. From thoughtful policy to achievable plans to successful implementation, whether it is natural barriers to bluff erosion or sea level rise, preservation of beloved hiking trails, relocating the coastal railroad tracks, fulfilling the City’s Climate Action Plan goals, or energizing our City with renewable energy, these are all matters that affect our quality of life. I remain dedicated to building on my past three years of work.

WE ALL COUNT

Join me and hundreds of others for the annual Point-in-Time Count. This will be my 10th year volunteering, and there is no better way to see firsthand the plight of our unhoused population and an experience you will not forget. Now is the time to sign up with the Regional Task Force on Homelessness to participate in this year’s count. The data we collect is key to understanding the needs of our unhoused neighbors and securing the resources to help them. Together, we can make a difference in improving the lives of our most vulnerable San Diegans.

OUT IN THE D1 COMMUNITY

It was a joy helping a local Carmel Valley Girl Scout Daisy Troop earn their “Democracy in Action” badge. I explained my role in local government and how being a voter one day will help shape their community. Thank you to the Daisies for their great questions and curiosity!
