A democratic crisis is brewing in North Carolina:

Justice Allison Riggs won her re-election to the NC Supreme Court by 734 votes, a margin confirmed by not one but two recounts. Her Republican opponent — Jefferson Griffin — couldn’t beat her at the ballot box, so he’s now trying to change the outcome of the election in court by challenging over 60,000 ballots.

That’s 60,000 voices he wants to ignore. 60,000 people he wants to suppress. We know this isn’t how elections work, but Griffin feels he’s above the law and the will of the people. Instead of winning outright, he’s now trying to steal this election — and we can’t let that happen.

The Republican majority of the North Carolina Supreme Court blocked the State Board of Elections from certifying Riggs as the winner, meaning the Court will hear Griffin’s challenge. Justice Allison Riggs won her seat fair and square, but because Griffin refuses to accept the will of the people — the will and votes of 60,000 people — our friends at the North Carolina Democratic Party are putting up an expensive legal fight.

Griffin’s claim that this challenge is to ensure “election integrity" is a lie. We know it’s really an attempt to overthrow the election. And his actions have far-reaching implications — national Republicans are throwing money and legal power at this effort, so they can establish a playbook there to overturn free and fair elections everywhere.

We need to help the North Carolina Dems show these anti-voter extremists that their strategy of litigating away their losses will not work. Free and fair elections still mean something, and we have to fight back to keep them that way.
