Voters appeal controversial Georgia Public Service Commission term extension

A federal judge Monday dismissed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of a 2024 Georgia law extending the term length of Georgia Public Service Commission members. The plaintiffs indicated they would appeal the decision.

The commission regulates public utilities and plays an important role in determining electricity prices and energy sources for Georgia Power customers. Commissioners are elected in statewide partisan elections.

Oral argument coming up tomorrow

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is scheduled to hear a lawsuit from Pennsylvania Republicans alleging Biden's executive order expanding voter registration in the state and the Pennsylvania governor’s automatic voter registration directive violate the U.S. Constitution. A lower court previously dismissed the case.
