Congressman Al Green Addresses the Recent Department of Justice Report Concerning the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre
(Washington, D.C.) — On Tuesday, January 14, 2025, Congressman Al Green penned a communique to Kristen Clarke, Assistant Attorney General for the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), addressing the release of the review and evaluation report on the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The Congressman expressed disappointment that the report does not address compensatory justice for the last two living survivors and the descendants of Greenwood — emphasizing the urgent need for accountability and reparative measures for this horrific event. A copy of the letter to the DOJ can be accessed online here.
“I want to express my gratitude to the DOJ for the release of the findings regarding the Tulsa Race Massacre. This comprehensive report represents a crucial step toward advancing justice and acknowledging the lasting impact this tragedy has had on the victims and descendants of the Greenwood community,” stated Congressman Al Green. “However, we must recognize that this does not prevent people of goodwill from seeking justice for the evil of a massacre perpetrated by White American citizens against Black American citizens in 1921 and perpetuated by an unjust justice system thereafter. Work must be done to ensure proper reconciliation. We must take decisive action to restore the generational wealth that was unjustly taken from this community and implement policies that promote equality infused with equity.”
