Y’all --
On Memorial Day, we reflect on and commemorate the sacrifices of our service members who died wearing the uniform of the United States.
As a combat search and rescue pilot during three tours in Afghanistan, I constantly came face-to-face with the realities of war. During my third tour, the Taliban opened fire on my helicopter. I was shot, and my aircraft went down. My crew and I worked together to complete the mission, and we made it out safe that day, but so many others -- friends of mine, good people I served with -- have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
As your senator, I won’t ever forget the bravery and strength of those service members (including those risking their lives as a pathway to citizenship). I’ll remember those I served with and friends of mine who made the ultimate sacrifice.
I am acutely aware that we have a responsibility to the men and women putting on the uniform today -- to provide them with the most stable global environment possible as they enter into service.
We can honor the sacrifices of those who fell by recognizing the value in seeking diplomatic solutions and employing strategic use of humanitarian assistance and trade negotiations while reserving the deployment of American troops as a last resort.
Additionally, I know firsthand what kind of support our service members need when they return to civilian life. And it’s time for Texas to send a leader to the U.S. Senate who’ll always do what’s right for our veterans, our service members, and their families.
Together, we can ensure Washington works for all of us, including the brave service members who have fought and continue to fight for our country.
