[Elevating Voices for Long-Lasting Change - January 23 at 3 p.m. ET]([link removed])
Join us for our upcoming episode of Elevating Voices for Long-Lasting Change, "A Candid Conversation About Suicide in the AAPI Community." AFSP Vice President for Health Equity and Engagement Victor (Vic) Armstrong, MSW, will moderate a discussion about the specific considerations regarding mental health and suicide prevention in Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. The conversation will consider:
- How rising suicide numbers among AAPI people, particularly among youth, are regarded by community members
- Strategies for engaging the AAPI community in discussions about suicide
- Generational differences in how AAPI community members talk about suicide
- Considerations about cultural nuances among different AAPI communities
- Practical steps that can be taken to address suicide and mental health among AAPI communities
The panelists include:
Justin A. Chen, MD, MpH, Vice Chair of Ambulatory Services, Vice Chair of Health Justice, and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medicine; Executive Director of the nonprofit, volunteer-operated Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Cross-Cultural Student Emotional Wellness
Dr. Pata Suyemoto, Executive Director of the National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association (NAAPIMHA) and leads the National Asian American Pacific Islander Empowerment Network; Feminist scholar, writer, educator, curriculum developer, equity trainer, and mental health activist
Susie [수지] Reynolds Reece, Director of Lived Experience Initiatives at the Suicide Prevention Resource Center; Leads the development of multi-organizational inclusion practices, provides guidance to national experts in the field, and develops international recommendations for centering lived experience in any field
Christine Yu Moutier, MD, Chief Medical Officer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention; Moutier has been a practicing psychiatrist, professor of psychiatry, dean in the medical school, and medical director of the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla, treating diverse patient populations
