Dear Neighbor,
It was an honor to return to the Capitol on Tuesday and take the oath of office in the Minnesota House of Representatives as a member of the 94th Legislature. We made history by electing the state’s first black Speaker of the House, Rep. Lisa Demuth.
It’s great to have balance restored to Minnesota government so everyone has a voice. I am motivated to get to work right away, but unfortunately House Democrats still have yet to show up. Anything that becomes law this session will require bipartisan support so I hope they end this political stunt soon.
We also have gotten our House committees up and running with meetings taking place this week. As mentioned in my last email, I'm excited to serve as the chair of the Children and Families Finance and Policy Committee. I’d like to personally invite all childcare providers for an important hearing this Wednesday, Jan. 22 (3 p.m. in Capitol Room 123).
The purpose of my invitation is to ask childcare providers, of all kinds, to come before the committee and inform the committee of specific regulations that drive up their costs. The average cost of center-based childcare is over $20k for infants and I’d like to learn more about why so we can make improvements to drive down costs for both centers and family based childcare.
Please email my committee’s administrator, [email protected], if you would like to attend the meeting and testify. Please let us know who you may be representing, or if you're testifying as an individual. I’m hoping for a nice turnout to collect input, especially from providers in our area. Again, the meeting is 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22 in Capitol Room 123. Hope to see you there!
Have a great weekend and please stay in touch.
Sincerely,
Nolan
