Good news! A deal has finally been reached for a cease-fire in Gaza which should be formalized on Sunday, pending the delayed vote by the Israeli government. There are many steps involved in achieving a permanent ceasefire; we remain cautiously optimistic. Thank you to everyone who protested and who called and wrote to their elected officials. And thank you for holding our staff in Gaza in the Light. These efforts were critical to bringing about a cease-fire.
With generous support from the AFSC community, over the past 15 months, our team has distributed food and water to hundreds of thousands of people. They have provided baby formula, diapers, and other essential support for infants and children. They have delivered hygiene kits with soap, detergent, sanitary napkins, and more, as well as mattresses and blankets. And they have provided children with school supplies, educational support, and recreational activities.
But the humanitarian need in Gaza is greater than ever before. We hope and pray that this cease-fire will hold until it is formalized this Sunday and through the three phases. In the meantime, we are making plans for the next phase of our relief efforts to help alleviate famine, deliver lifesaving medical aid, and provide essential goods and services.
AFSC’s work is guided by the Quaker belief in the divine light in every person and a deep commitment to human rights and dignity. Our team in Gaza has embodied these values. They have acted with love and courage to help people survive under catastrophic conditions. They kept going, even as they lost loved ones, were displaced, and faced scarcity of essential supplies. We are deeply moved and grateful for all they have been able to accomplish.
Hearing the news of an impending cease-fire, Firas Ramlawi, an AFSC staff member in Gaza wrote: “I will search for my voice that disappeared amidst the sounds of the explosions and the echo of the frightening silence, reveal in it I will find the remains of a human being who refuses to be destroyed.” For today, please join me in holding in the Light all those who have been killed and injured, all who mourn, and all who have survived.
