Dear John,
Just last November, the Dallas voters turned out for marijuana decriminalization — and now the policy is in effect throughout the city.
When we launched our Dallas campaign, it was with the knowledge that decriminalization was long overdue and urgently needed in Texas’s third largest city. Arrests for possession of personal use amounts of marijuana were disproportionately affecting residents of color, and the fallout from those charges often caused lasting harm to both individuals and their communities.
We know that this policy benefits cities in multiple ways, and we’re thrilled that it’s now in effect in Dallas. According to local news outlet WFAA, “Dallas officers are now prohibited making arrests or issuing citations for marijuana possession – four ounces or less.”
However, this needed change in Dallas is not set in stone — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has already filed a lawsuit against the city, despite nearly identical suits against Austin and San Marcos being thrown out of court last year.
The best way to protect our win in Dallas is to continue to build our organizing power across the state — and we need your support to do that. Join our Grassroots Growers by chipping in just $1 a month (or more!) to sustain and grow this movement. With your help, we can prevent Paxton and his allies from rolling back the clock on progress.
