Yesterday, the governments of the United States, Egypt and Qatar announced that a ceasefire agreement has been reached between Israel and Hamas. That’s the good news, but there’s also bad news.

The bad news is that we can’t be sure how long this will last. Israel has a history of violating ceasefire agreements and they did so as recently as last month in Lebanon. This supposed ceasefire also doesn’t go into effect until January 19, giving Israel three days to wreak even more havoc on the people of Gaza.

But even if this ceasefire is for real and Netanyahu sticks to his word, the devastation in Gaza cannot be undone. In the past 15 months, the Israeli military has killed at least 45,000 people and even more bodies are likely to be discovered under the rubble.

While focusing on the mass death and destruction in Gaza, many have also lost sight of the continued apartheid system imposed on Palestinians in the West Bank. We might finally have a ceasefire, but we’re far away from justice and equality.

What’s worse is that 55 members of the House Progressive Caucus voted to send weapons to Israel during the genocide and dozens of others didn’t even call for a ceasefire until there were already thousands of children dead in Gaza.

Our mission is to hold accountable the members of Congress who enabled Israel and, if necessary, vote them out of Congress and give them black eyes that stain the rest of their careers. Can you donate $10 or whatever you can spare to help us name and shame the members of the House Progressive Caucus who did nothing as Netanyahu and his military massacred the people of Gaza?

Even if this ceasefire is sustained and successful, we still have a lot of work to do. Far right pro-Israel groups like AIPAC have tens of millions of dollars but we have morality on our side. Now, we just need to make sure “progressives” in Congress actually stand with what’s right and not with MAGA-aligned AIPAC.
